I posted up a bunch of my fic on AO3. This includes All Dogs Go which is apparently on a lot of SB/RL rec lists but has been missing from the web since the archive it was on went away. I can only hope I managed to post the right version and not one of the earlier drafts.

I am trying to write some Asric/Jadaar because there is not enough of it, and also because I hear they're not moving anywhere new in Cata and that is just depressing. I want to get them out of Northrend--the Lich King is dead, they were too chicken/lazy to enter the Tournament anyway, there's no reason for them to stay hanging out there. It's cold, the only shelter is a bunch of tents and the drinks can't be that good.

Where should I send them? Maybe they decide they're fed up of trying to make names for themselves and want to move to fabulous, tropical Stranglethorn, where they open a tiki bar? ("And why the hell should I come with you?" "I need somebody to serve the drinks, you need a job. Who else do you know?" "...god dammit.") Or do they hear there is valuable treasure under the sands of newly-discovered Uldum? Does Asric paint Jadaar red, move them to Silvermoon and try to pass himself off as a really powerful warlock? (No. This does not happen. I hope.) Does he get contacts and pose as a High Elf so they can hang out in Alliance territory? Maybe they dye their hair, change their names and go back to Shattrath, where absolutely nobody believes their bullshit story so they wind up living in a little shack on one of the floating islands in Nagrand. Then they solve the mystery of the murdered fruit vendor and get their old jobs back! Or not. I don't know. Help me out here.

Maybe they open a tiki bar in Booty Bay, where they hear from one of their ambiguously criminal clientele that there is valuable treasure in Uldum, so they go there and fail miserably at impressing the cat people, piss off Harrison Jones, are run out of the zone in disgrace, find themselves evicted from their tiki bar (because goblin landlords don't care if you are on another continent, they want the rent on time)--which is turning a much better profit under the new management--so they pool their remaining resources to dye their hair, change their names and go back to Shattrath. And then they solve the mystery of the murdered fruit vendor and get their old jobs back.

It could work, y/n?

Also at some point along the way they start making out, because that is how I roll.

Would you read/do you think people would read paranormal (vampire/werewolf) romance where the hero is the vampire, the heroine is the werewolf, they are both university professors, and theirs is a snarky and banter-y relationship?

I promise nothing. Just the fact that I have said something about it here may mean I wind up talking about it instead of ever writing it.

So I have sorted out what my trouble is with NaNo and has been since 2005.

Well, okay, I'm not entirely sure about 2005, because a large part of that was that November 2005 was the month I met Nigel, and I became preoccupied with the beginning of a relationship and having sex on a regular basis.

But apart from that, my trouble is and has been that, after winning in 2004, I began trying to take NaNo seriously.

This is a fatal mistake.

While it is all well and good that I want to take on these big ambitious projects--the Lilith Davis Chronicles, the Pernfic, YA novels involving half-sirens and/or lesbian separatist werewolves--they are best attempted at other times and at a slower pace.

November is for silliness.

I realized I was taking NaNo far too seriously this year when [ profile] tresca_cho's suggestion to add ninjas and stir seemed like a bad idea. It's NaNo! Of course I should add ninjas!

But, you see, it is the Pernfic, and I have specific goals for the Pernfic, and there are no ninjas on Pern.

I am up my own ass about it this year. That's why it isn't working.

The year I won, I padded my word count with comic relief pirates, gratuitous gay sex, and a song about rum 75% of whose lyrics were "rum". I also set the thing in a fictional world of my own devising, which saved me a lot of research, although my seamanship book was invaluable. This year I can't find my Dragonlover's Guide to Pern, which was a body blow to my writing effort, and I am trying too hard to write the thing in Anne McCaffrey's voice, which is a stupid idea in the first place. Also I am trying to write something actually serious, which never works for me. Possibly all my enormous unfinished projects need to be revamped and made more silly.

The Pernfic will be finished eventually (with added silliness and flirting). It will not happen this month. I am abandoning NaNo this year, on the grounds that I am not in the right headspace for it. Next year I'm going to come back strong with Discworld-meets-Hornblower--and maybe even a ninja or two.

I know one or two of you are interested in the Pernfic I was talking about all those months ago; this is it.

I will post my NaNo at [ profile] nanowrimo_wolf. (That's at LJ only, people, I haven't got mirrors for it.) Writing it chronologically seems to be working out.

First chapter to be up momentarily.

I don't think I'm going to be posting my NaNo at [ profile] nanowrimo_wolf this year, at least not until the end of the month, because I think I'm going to be writing it out of order--just working on scenes as they come to me. Then I can fill in the gaps later in the month after I have a handle on the characters and plot.

I will post it eventually. But I might actually wait until the whole thing is finished.

A Thought

When I am on my Ritalin, I get ridiculously chatty and long-winded. More so than usual, I mean.

By the time November rolls around, I will be on my Ritalin again.

This year's NaNoWriMo is totally in the bag.

I have just discovered this excellent work of HP gen fanfic by Thanfiction entitled Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness. It is absolutely amazing and chronicles the offscreen badassery in which we never got to see the DA engaging in Deathly Hallows. It is Neville-centric and made of utter win.

I keep saying to myself, reading it, that this is the book I wanted to read. I'm only up to chapter 8. I have no doubt it will continue to be just as awesome right up until the end.

I am going to talk about the awesome but I don't want to spoil anyone for the fic (BECAUSE I EXPECT YOU ALL TO READ IT IT IS AMAZING), so I'm going to talk about it under the cut. )

Anyway, this fic? This fic has got me on the delicious emotional rollercoaster, has got me feeling that same sense of adrenaline-fueled suspense, has got me throwing my hands up in joy and squeeing and covering my mouth and my eyes welling up and nodding helplessly because it's so perfect because yes that's what happens of course of course just like my early experience with the books, during the three-year summer when I devoured one through four in a week (Goblet of Fire in thirty-six hours not stopping to sleep and then straight to work in a daze feeling like I was high it was the best summer ever).

This is the book Deathly Hallows should have been.

Oh, all right, it isn't everything, it doesn't give us anything of Harry's story (because we know it already), but if we had got this in between the important parts of the camping, it would have been perfect.

An unprecedented seven out of four pawprints. Read it now.

Everyone go and read this first installment of [ profile] sarahtales's short story set in The Demon's Lexicon universe (but spoiler-free). It is win.

Then go buy the book because: also win!

Dear Mae-haters/dislikers,

You're honestly going to condemn a girl for flirting with more than one guy when she's single? Really?

A'ight, good luck with that.

With this job happening, and since Nigel is definitely getting paid for at least the three days he's going to be down there working, I can totally buy [ profile] sarahtales's book when it comes out tomorrow! Win!

One of the characters needs to have the title "Warlady". I have been meaning to do this for far too many years and not done it. "Warlady So-and-so", you're needed in casting.

A city with two different city walls, one inside the other, because at some point they were at peace with everybody and things inside the walls were just too crowded and they started building outside the walls--and then war broke out, and they had to build another wall.

Maybe the second wall is under construction during the story.

Leather tents on the grasslands and really, really good horses. These are Warlady So-and-so's people. They have tattoos, possibly, facial tattoos that are clan-markings. Shoulder bows and polearms.

By the way, y'all, Knife was awesome but I want to reread it before saying anything in-depth about it because I tore through it in three hours on the plane. Which just goes to show how freaking awesome it was because I haven't read a book that fast since high school.

So I'm still working on the Pern fic that I was talking about a bit ago, and what I'm doing right now is, I'm making a list of all the dragons and riders in the Weyr so that I can just pull a character from the list whenever I need one and not have to come up with one on the spot. Also it's helping me flesh out some subplots because pretty much the entire population of the Weyr, other than the new weyrlings themselves, is made up of characters I have pulled from various fandoms and AU-ified.

Trouble is, I need 121 more people for my list.

And so where you guys come in is, if you have a fandom and/or a character you think I should include, let me know! I won't tell you what I've already done, because I do want to make people guess at this stuff while reading the fic. Except that we did learn last time that the weyrleaders are Mal and Inara, so there's that.

I reserve the right to pair people up however I please, but if there's a pairing you think I should consider, go ahead and suggest it. (Caveat: These people are the extras, not the main characters, so any pairings that happen in the fic will probably just be mentioned in passing, in the sense of "Weyrsinger W'lam and his weyrmate L'zan were enjoying a cup of klah at Dalynna's table when Sollaly approached to ask about her cohort's next chore assignment.") Pairings will be het, slash and femslash, just like in real life.

So, in particular, in addition to just "a bunch of dragonriders", I need 7 wingseconds--all of whom are brownriders, and yes, I know, obviously, other colors can be wingseconds, I have two bronzes and one blue already taken, and I do have one brown wingleader. But so I need 3 other brownriders, 57 blues and 54 greens. As with pairings, I reserve the right to stick anyone I please on any color dragon I please, but if you feel there's a case to be made for a character having a particular color, I'll consider it. I just won't...tell you what I'm doing. I'm sneaky like that. You'll have to figure it out reading the fic.

To confuse you further, some of these people, instead of being fandom characters proper or regular OCs, are OCs from fics I've written in various fandoms. Whee!

But so yeah, if you guys could just, like, list all your fandoms here, that would be great. Don't restrict it to stuff I talk about! You never know what I might have read/seen!

Okay, So

Some of you may already be aware what an enormous freaking dork I am. I mean, like, seriously, giant, giant dork. And because of my dorkiness, like, as a direct result, I have been reading Anne McCaffrey's Pern books since I was about eleven.

Also because of my dorkiness I have started planning out a super-long fanfic for said books.

cut for dorkiness and fic spoilers )

cut for snippet of possible beginning )

See? Enormous dork.

If you give the Chronicles of Narnia a good rating on, they will recommend the His Dark Materials trilogy to you. Now, you know and I know that I, being who I am, have the capacity to enjoy both these series, but one is a Christian allegory and the other promotes atheism. Large, large numbers of people will be offended by this. This tickles me. Is this "all children's fantasy is the same" or is it "well they both have talking animals in"? The world may never know.
