I did win NaNoWriMo. The story itself is not quite finished. I am beating it into submission.

The cushion I built up in Week 2 saw my handily through the Week 3 slump. I am treading water at just about a day ahead of schedule and expect to finish sometime between Sunday and Tuesday.

I am really having a wonderful time writing this totally shameless Mary Sue. Allowing myself to write just for me, with the absolute guarantee that no one else ever has to see it, has been very freeing and a great stress reliever. I think I will do some more of these for some of the other characters I have crushes on over the next few years.

If I say that my pointless and failtastic Mary Sue NaNo is related to my previous post, you guys have to promise neither to be totally disappointed in me nor to ask to read it (because no one must ever read it).

Pretty sure I'm gonna win again this year.

Totally pointless Mary Sue this year. I'm not even comfortable admitting what character the Sue is interacting with. Word count's going fast, though. Having a ton of fun.

So I have sorted out what my trouble is with NaNo and has been since 2005.

Well, okay, I'm not entirely sure about 2005, because a large part of that was that November 2005 was the month I met Nigel, and I became preoccupied with the beginning of a relationship and having sex on a regular basis.

But apart from that, my trouble is and has been that, after winning in 2004, I began trying to take NaNo seriously.

This is a fatal mistake.

While it is all well and good that I want to take on these big ambitious projects--the Lilith Davis Chronicles, the Pernfic, YA novels involving half-sirens and/or lesbian separatist werewolves--they are best attempted at other times and at a slower pace.

November is for silliness.

I realized I was taking NaNo far too seriously this year when [livejournal.com profile] tresca_cho's suggestion to add ninjas and stir seemed like a bad idea. It's NaNo! Of course I should add ninjas!

But, you see, it is the Pernfic, and I have specific goals for the Pernfic, and there are no ninjas on Pern.

I am up my own ass about it this year. That's why it isn't working.

The year I won, I padded my word count with comic relief pirates, gratuitous gay sex, and a song about rum 75% of whose lyrics were "rum". I also set the thing in a fictional world of my own devising, which saved me a lot of research, although my seamanship book was invaluable. This year I can't find my Dragonlover's Guide to Pern, which was a body blow to my writing effort, and I am trying too hard to write the thing in Anne McCaffrey's voice, which is a stupid idea in the first place. Also I am trying to write something actually serious, which never works for me. Possibly all my enormous unfinished projects need to be revamped and made more silly.

The Pernfic will be finished eventually (with added silliness and flirting). It will not happen this month. I am abandoning NaNo this year, on the grounds that I am not in the right headspace for it. Next year I'm going to come back strong with Discworld-meets-Hornblower--and maybe even a ninja or two.

Here.

I know one or two of you are interested in the Pernfic I was talking about all those months ago; this is it.

I will post my NaNo at [livejournal.com profile] nanowrimo_wolf. (That's at LJ only, people, I haven't got mirrors for it.) Writing it chronologically seems to be working out.

First chapter to be up momentarily.

I don't think I'm going to be posting my NaNo at [livejournal.com profile] nanowrimo_wolf this year, at least not until the end of the month, because I think I'm going to be writing it out of order--just working on scenes as they come to me. Then I can fill in the gaps later in the month after I have a handle on the characters and plot.

I will post it eventually. But I might actually wait until the whole thing is finished.

A Thought

When I am on my Ritalin, I get ridiculously chatty and long-winded. More so than usual, I mean.

By the time November rolls around, I will be on my Ritalin again.

This year's NaNoWriMo is totally in the bag.

OMG, Shit!

So it's just hit me what it means that it is now October, and why I have been feeling this vague sense of dread all this past week.

Next month is November. I totally do not have my shit together for NaNoWriMo.

I am doing the Pern thing, people! Some of you will remember my plans for the Massively Multifandom Pern AU wherein all the fandom characters are in fact the background characters to the OCs I have created to shake up Fort Weyr's gender roles.

Well, I need to sort out my fandom characters still. I have a lot of them left that I know I want to put in but not how/where. And I need to sort out my plot, or at least get a vague outline together, because if I don't have one I will fail again this year.

And I really want to shake up Fort Weyr's gender roles, so I have to succeed.

So anyway, yeah, that's my task this month is to get myself sorted out on this thing. PLEASE DO NOT LET ME START ACTUALLY WRITING IT BEFORE NOVEMBER.

And for those of you just tuning in, the actual NaNo will reside at [livejournal.com profile] nanowrimo_wolf (LJ only) as per usual.

One of the characters needs to have the title "Warlady". I have been meaning to do this for far too many years and not done it. "Warlady So-and-so", you're needed in casting.

A city with two different city walls, one inside the other, because at some point they were at peace with everybody and things inside the walls were just too crowded and they started building outside the walls--and then war broke out, and they had to build another wall.

Maybe the second wall is under construction during the story.

Halberds.

Leather tents on the grasslands and really, really good horses. These are Warlady So-and-so's people. They have tattoos, possibly, facial tattoos that are clan-markings. Shoulder bows and polearms.

In...case anyone cares, the first chapter of my NaNo has been up at [livejournal.com profile] nanowrimo_wolf (LJ; I don't have any mirror journals for it) for a while now. I only mention it because nobody has commented on it at all and I craves the feedback.

It has just come to me. It all makes perfect sense. The year I won NaNoWriMo was the last year I made the commitment to fully participate while not having high-speed internet.

In 2005 I had no internet at all, but I had a brand new boyfriend and was too busy having sex to write.

In 2006 and 2007, boom, high-speed internet. And what does that mean? Well, when I had dial-up, I was able to log off the internet so that I wouldn't be tempted to read a bunch of websites instead of writing. Now I never close my Firefox window unless I'm shutting down my computer. I just...never close it. It's always there in case I need it. So if I get to a point in the writing where there is a kind of lull and I don't know quite what to do next, I wander through some forums and blogs for an hour or so. This is not a productive method.

In fact I should really stop making this post.

Result! My protagonist's name is Kaylee Tanner.

I'm not doing the Norrington court-martial thing. It could be interesting, but I'm not doing it. I'm going to do something original, because that's the only way I've ever been able to win.

Also factors in the year I actually won NaNo: it was a Presidential election year, I was all het up about politics, and my candidate didn't win. Considering that my candidate, barring a fucking miracle, is guaranteed not to win this year, I think I'm on the right track.

I'm going to do young adult fantasy. My protagonist is a fat sixteen-year-old who discovers she's part something not human. I'm thinking she might be queer as well but I'll let her work that out; the last time I tried to force one of my characters to be queer, it...didn't work out so well. The character and her love interest had no chemistry because she kept insisting she was straight. I should have listened.

The fun I'm having now is trying to do some worldbuilding, digging around on Google Maps looking at little Michigan towns to base my town on. I'm also trying to figure out what the hell to name my protagonist.

Is going to be an interesting ride. Working title is Dauntless: Being an Account of the Court-Martial of One James Norrington, Commodore, of His Britannic Majesty's Navy. So if you think I'm going to spend the next several weeks watching and rewatching POTC2, Hornblower volumes Mutiny and Retribution, and the fantastic Anthony Hopkins film Bounty, you're absolutely right.

Anybody want to help me settle on a year to set the thing in? Argue for the decade you think POTC is set in, if you want to, and link me to anybody else's ramblings on the subject that I might not have seen. And if you know stuff about naval law and court-martials at that time, bonus. I'm leaning toward about 1740; what do y'all think?

For those of you who might want to follow along with my progress over the course of next month, check out [livejournal.com profile] nanowrimo_wolf at LJ.

In a related story, and possibly as a partial warm-up to writing in the POTC universe (can you believe I've never done it?), stay tuned for Jack Sparrow's parents!fic.
