The cushion I built up in Week 2 saw my handily through the Week 3 slump. I am treading water at just about a day ahead of schedule and expect to finish sometime between Sunday and Tuesday.

I am really having a wonderful time writing this totally shameless Mary Sue. Allowing myself to write just for me, with the absolute guarantee that no one else ever has to see it, has been very freeing and a great stress reliever. I think I will do some more of these for some of the other characters I have crushes on over the next few years.

If I say that my pointless and failtastic Mary Sue NaNo is related to my previous post, you guys have to promise neither to be totally disappointed in me nor to ask to read it (because no one must ever read it).

That everybody on the Thor kink meme is just so awesome and well-read and shit, I can hardly stand it.

Also, I may have committed myself to writing A) a Viking-age AU and B) a crossover with Supernatural, Star Trek: TNG and possibly Gargoyles wherein Loki hangs out with some fellow Tricksters and pranks the shit out of the Avengers. (Prompt was nonspecific as to how but oh, I have the greatest and most hilarious idea.)

Guys. I think I'm gonna have to watch some Supernatural.

Meanwhile, I am working on a Super Sekrit Crossover involving a character I have decided is definitely Loki's biological mother. I don't want to say who it is, but I am convinced it can be awesome if I don't fuck it up, and the hint is this: he has her eyes.

Those of you who know me IRL will probably remember my somewhat half-assed attempt at an elf costume for the ROTK opening. I was supposed to be a sort of rank-and-file Mirkwood archer, but I'm fairly sure everyone at my showing thought I was a poorly-researched Legolas.

Well, now that promotional photos of costumed Dwarves are coming out for The Hobbit, I have decided to try to do better this time.

To that end, I've spent most of today doing a concept sketch and working on a color scheme. I'm doing something loosely based on a cross between Legolas' jerkin and Arwen's flowy grey riding habit thing: a bit more girly than Legolas, a bit more practical than Arwen, and building on some of the design elements of my original costume. When I'm a little further along, I'll upload my sketch and include that and some color swatches in a [community profile] dressdiaries post (or in a post here that I link to from over there, you know, whatever).

For now, I'll just tell you that since my hair is red these days, I'm going with a sort of "turning leaves" color story.

If anyone knows where I can find a large (at least 3") gold- or copper-toned Elvish-looking barette for a reasonable price, please tell me. I've got a few things bookmarked on Etsy but they're just okay, and if I can find something more toward the "awesome" end of the spectrum I will be pleased. Any stones must be green and/or white. I like aventurine, but that's for personal reasons rather than canonical ones.

(Not intended to be a factual statement.)

The experience I am having in Thor fandom right now has brought home to me that--okay, how to put it.

I know there was a time when I would see a movie, or get into a new TV show, or read a new book, and not immediately A) start shipping at least one non-canon1 pairing2 and B) dive headfirst into ALL THE FIC.

This time existed. I know it must have. Newsies was my first real fandom and it was years before I started reading fic for anything else. And then more years before slash became my Way Of Life.3

So at some point, obviously, I would things? Read books? Just passively consume--I mean, not totally passively, obviously, any story you take in you interact with it if only in your own head, but.

I don't remember what that was like. I can't fathom it now. How do you--if I watch something, and I'm not immediately digging for fic all that night, it's because I didn't like it much.

So I have to wonder--did I have the need, but not see how to fill it? Was that why I so often used to see things five, six times in the theater? Because I wanted more of the characters, of their world, and didn't know any other way to get it?

I mean. Even after I became consumed by the world of fandom, I still did go see things many times in the theater, but it was usually for the purpose of writing my own fic, of knowing the movie inside out so I didn't fuck anything up. And I can't do that anymore, obviously, because of being broke.

But these days, it's almost like-- Okay, so in the beginning there was Canon, right, and I was interested in that, and then I became interested in Fic because it was like exploring Canon in a new way, but now, it's almost like there is Fic and I seek out new Canon because of the Fic that will follow. Like it used to be Fic's purpose was Canon, and now Canon's purpose is Fic.

Is this making sense to anyone but me? Uh, no.

IDEK, whatever. Just know that I am currently rolling around in fanfic like Scrooge McDuck swimming in his pool full of money, metaphorically speaking.

1. I don't get people who read and write fic for canon pairings. I just don't. Your pairing's story is already there. Isn't that enough for you?
3. I keep meaning to write a post about this, but I'll just put it here because there's not really enough to it to make it more than a couple sentences: I think I like slash primarily because I almost never see romantic/porny fic with women in it where both parties have sexual agency. That's cultural, and thanks again, patriarchy, but there it is.

I can't believe I never posted this.

I posted up a bunch of my fic on AO3. This includes All Dogs Go which is apparently on a lot of SB/RL rec lists but has been missing from the web since the archive it was on went away. I can only hope I managed to post the right version and not one of the earlier drafts.

I get "emo", but how can you call Zuko "spoiled" when his father BURNED HIM IN THE FACE for speaking his mind and KICKED HIM OUT OF THE COUNTRY? Are you HIGH?

Okay so I was trying to catch up to R/S fandom because, you know, the Puppies were in fact my first HP ship, and so I have been perusing reclists, and it turns out "All Dogs Go" is, like, ON SOME OF THEM. But! I can't remember where the hell I posted it and Azkaban's Lair is down. So I am going to post it here so the internets can has it again. After I figure out which folder it's saved in.

You guys, I think I have been reading too much Spockfic. Because, you know, sometimes I'll make macaroni and cheese, right? And so I'll have a bowl of macaroni and cheese, and I'll be eating it, and then the bowl will be empty. AND THEN. I will wander around the apartment saying things like, "I require additional macaroni and cheese. This quantity of macaroni and cheese contained within this bowl was insufficient to my purposes."

Spock's sweater, in the scene in ST XI where he is telling the Vulcan Science Academy to go fuck itself live long and prosper, I'm pretty sure that's fisherman's rib. It also appears to be a fiber with little to no elasticity; there is a grow-with-wearness about it that, to me, says cotton, but I suppose it could also be silk.

A "oneshot" is a story that only has one part. If you post parts one and two of your oneshot, UR DOIN IT RONG.

Dropped Nigel off at work. Downloaded some free cross stitch patterns and took a nap. Washed hair. Filled out job application. Went to MRS appointment. Put gas in car. Picked Nigel up from work, where he insisted on taking me to Pizza Hut for going to my appointment--he had planned to do so yesterday after I went to the motivational group, because I hadn't wanted to go when we got up because I wasn't feeling well and also because the person who runs it does a lot of victim-blaming and talks about Jesus and food addiction more than this Wolf prefers to deal with, and in fact for these very reasons I did not go yesterday. Yesterday I took a day off from everything and sat on my arse because I really did not feel good.

But today I went to my appointment, and got to go to Pizza Hut.

Worked on the stocking I am cross stitching for Nigel. I didn't finish it in time for Christmas, obviously; I found the box it was in while organizing the craft closet and so I thought I had better pick it up again if I'm going to finish it in time for this Christmas.

Attempted to watch the first episode of Torchwood. Failed. Just cannot get into it. Gave it the old college try, but it's just not my thing. Not really into secret government agency dealing with aliens at the best of times, unless it's silly, and really the episode suffered from far too much Exposition Fairy. I think I got through about half an hour of it before I was just like, meh, fuck it.

Read some K/S fanfic. Watched The Emperor's New Groove if by "watched" you mean "sat in front of and listened to while cross stitching" and I do.

Realized that two of the pairs of jeans that I think of as fitting me really don't, so I effectively only have one pair of jeans.

Spent a bunch of time researching a container garden I will not have it together to plant this year, financially or otherwise. Partly because we haven't decided yet if we want to renew our lease or if we will try to move. Partly because I can't afford to be buying a bunch of pots and dirt, especially since there is other shit around the house that needs done first. It's all very well to say it's more cost-effective in the long run to grow, for instance, my own strawberries, but in reality that's only true if the food stamps pay for the pots, dirt and strawberry plants, which they don't.

Missed raid because the internet keeps failing and I thought I would be in bed long before now. Just cannot seem to feel like going to sleep. Possibly will turn lights down, listen to soothing music, make chamomile tea.

Um, Kids

How the fuck have I never seen The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert before? Which one of you is responsible for this oversight? Okay it was the fault of the goddamn Family Video up in Big Hole for not carrying it and then me for not thinking to check surfthechannel until now, but still.

(I'm on my lunch break, okay? Anyway I had to post this right away, I don't want to forget it.)

No fucking wonder the Slytherins wound up so dysfunctional. The dungeons were absolutely the wrong environment. You don't put reptiles in a cold, dark, damp place!

So, okay. Nigel and I went to see Sherlock Holmes on Sunday. (I know, I know, way behind the curve--it didn't come to our town, and then it came to the Cheap Flicks last weekend, so we went and spent the $6.)

SO ANYWAY. The slashiness of Holmes/Watson comes through even with the respective romantic interests in the movie. Proof: Nigel, The Man With No Gaydar, has spent the time since comparing the two of us to Holmes/Watson.

Trigger warning.

Your warning for dub-con triggers me. Being made to remember the fact that some people think there is such a thing as "dubious consent" triggers me. Because what is "dubious consent" as it is written about in fanfic?

The exact circumstances of my rape.

"Dubious consent" is no consent. It's a situation where the victim has said no, or has not said yes, or has said yes after coercion, but is aroused anyway.

When I was raped, I was aroused. I was aroused by the stuff that happened before the rape, the stuff I did consent to. But I DID NOT want penetration to happen. And I was not asked. My arousal was taken as consent.

I feel like I'm not saying this well but possibly that is because I am kind of freaking out trying to write the post.

I don't know, I don't--I know this will alienate a lot of people, I know there are a loooooot of people who have a big problem with anybody saying "your kink is wrong!" But if you like dub-con? YOUR KINK IS WRONG. You are getting off to something THAT HAPPENED TO ME AND WAS NOT OKAY.

It has happened to many, many other people and every time it happens is not okay.

I wanted--to make a long and involved post about this but it turns out it really is that cut-and-dried. "Dub-con" is rape. Your kink is wrong. It disgusts and frightens me that people want to get off to one of the worst things that has happened to me in my life.
